First Official Day.

For the first time in probably half a year…I woke up before 10am. Even before 8. In fact, I got up at 6am and it felt amazing, atleast until I entertained the idea that I would be stuck doing a month of knife-sharpening and skiving. Bah! Nonsense, things will get better I’m sure!

So another morning walk to the workshop with Seiji, exchanging stories and shoemaking talk. I can really get used to this weather, not scorching hot but perfect to compliment my rolled-up sleeves (as if my perfectly sculpted forearms weren’t enough).

Dani (the other student) arrived today, and I was slightly put-off by the fact that she didn’t have to do 8 hours of knife sharpening and skiving. Instead, we both got to get started on shoe-lasting. Well, not complete shoe-lasting, but atleast making a start on the toe.

Quite pretty is it not?

We continued learning tips and tricks and working on toe-lasting for a while, then Marcell took me around town to various leather shops while Dani was left to work on knife-sharpening and skiving (HAH!).

It was a great experience looking around with Marcell and checking out leather, and on the way back I got to take some nice photos of the city! They would have been better if Marcell cleaned his windshield though 😆

The city tour finally ended and we got back to the workshop, where Dani was busily skiving with a particular hint of misery on her face. I guess it’s some sort of initiation ritual Marcell puts his students through.

Before I head back to the hostel, one quick look at some leather that any leather-head is sure to bust a nut over:

it takes one horse to get each piece. a real beauty.
